Archaeological History of Iran

This chapter presents an overview of archaeological exploration in Iran. Particular emphasis is placed on the French excavations at Susa, begun in 1884 by Marcel Dieulafoy; the major excavations that took place between 1927 and 1979 (e.g., at Persepolis by Ernst Herzfeld and Erich Schmidt; and Hasanlu); and developments since the Iranian Revolution. The work of important scholars and significant projects is highlighted. The growth of archaeology as a discipline in Iran and the work of Iranian scholars, especially E. Negahban, are emphasized.
